The Call of the Tranquility: An Expression of Traditional Chinese Brush Painting The new exhibit, The Call of the Tranquility: An Expression of Traditional Chinese Brush Painting, featuring the work of Huangxin (Derek) Wang, Chenlin Cai, Lijun Tian, and Jennifer Yuan, will run from June 11, 2018 through January 2019 at the Exhibit Gallery of Pearl S. Buck International in Hilltown, Bucks County, PA. The exhibit displays the work of four contemporary artists who continue the ancient tradition of Chinese brush painting, a unique art form that has developed over 6,000 years. Chinese brush painting had a profound influence on the development of art in East Asia. In the 15th century, Chinese painting branched off a style, called scholastic abstraction, that was considered avant garde. Traditionally, Chinese painting used ink, colors and brushes on rice paper. Today, Chinese painting sustains its vitality through the transformation of art ideals and new media. Artists Huangxin (Derek) Wang, an artist and educator, inherited the traditional training of GuoHua from his father, Master Wang Lanruo (1911-2015), then branched off to create his own style and concentrated on landscape and “birds-and-flowers” with modern topics. He has taught Chinese painting classes at the Guanghua Chinese School in Blue Bell, PA since 2010. Mr. Wang has lectured on Chinese painting at Freeman’s Main Line gallery, the Chester County Art Center, the Guanghua Chinese Culture Center, the Free Library of Philadelphia, and Germantown Academy; introducing Chinese painting and art history to the general public. To learn more about his work go to http://guanghuaart.org/about.html. Chenlin Cai earned his MFA from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Currently, he resides in both cities. Mr. Cai combines his traditional training as a classical artist with a modern and innovative use of paint on non-traditional materials and surfaces, experimenting with multi-media expression. To learn more about his work go to www.caichenlin.com/. Lijun Tian is an artist and IT consultant. She combines her love for art and nature in her work and enjoys using many mediums: colored pencil, acrylic on canvas or paper, oil on canvas, and Chinese ink-color on rice paper. Jennifer Yuan is an artist, writer, and IT professional. Her paintings have been shown at Freeman’s Main Line gallery, the Greater Philadelphia Chinese Cultural Center gallery, and the curated Pearl S. Buck Holiday Craft Show.
