Every parent, especially of a younger child, worries sometimes: Have I prepared my son or daughter for the safety risks they encounter every day? It’s easy to feel that concern. The world is full of settings where you hope your child will be safe – like crossing the street, or riding a bike, or swimming in a friend’s pool. You always hope they’ll remember the right thing to do. Here’s some news to unfurrow your brow, parents: When it comes to electrical safety, PPL Electric Utilities has your back. We’re once again sponsoring a lively, kid-friendly stage show called “Safety Detectives in Hot Pursuit” that brings electrical safety messages into schools. Between Oct. 16 and Nov. 10, we’ll put on 67 shows in 37 schools across central and eastern Pennsylvania, reaching more than 16,000 children. Locally, the “Safety Detectives” performed this fall at: Richland Elementary School and Trumbauersville Elementary School in Quakertown. We’ve been arranging “Safety Detectives” shows since October 2015, and so far we’ve reached about 27,500 students. Our goal is to deliver the program to 100,000 students in our service territory over a five-year period. The performances are put on by The National Theatre for Children, a nonprofit organization that presents programs to school children nationwide. The Safety Detectives remind kids not to use frayed cords, not to place cloths over lamps, and to keep electric appliances away from water, among other tips. We do this because safety is a top priority for us – for our employees and our customers alike. We think it’s important that children learn the basics of electrical safety, and these shows bring the messages home in a relatable way. (Speaking of bringing things home, we encourage kids who see the Safety Detectives to discuss the things they learn with their families. Hopefully, we’ll also reach older and younger siblings – not to mention some parents.) Unfortunately, we can’t bring our show to every school, every year. But we offer other safety programs and resources, like our safety website (www.pplelectric.com/safety) , which includes information on a wide range of electrical safety topics. Our employees volunteer to give many safety presentations each year to groups like volunteer fire departments. And we deliver our safety message with our Live Line Electrical Safety Exhibit, which shows the many dangers associated with electricity and contact with power lines. Electricity is a powerful force, but it’s easy to stay safe around it, with a little attention. That’s the message we spread in all settings. Hopefully, that will ease a little worry for Pennsylvania parents.
