Janet L. Mintzer, President and CEO of Pearl S. Buck International announced today that Covenant Bank has made a $40,000 EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) contribution which will support a unique educational program for elementary through high school students including homeschoolers. The Pearl S. Buck International School Tours Program was developed in response to an expressed need by local parents and educators to expand their students’ and children’s knowledge of other cultures and increase awareness of the world beyond their own borders. The program includes a tour of the National Historic Landmark home of Nobel and Pulitzer prize-winning author, Pearl S. Buck and focuses on her legacy of humanitarianism, cultural understanding, literature, and activism. Topics covered vary from World War II, the Cold War, immigration, civil rights to other related themes of 20th century history. Ms. Mintzer noted how valuable Covenant Bank’s EITC contributions have been over the last few years and that their support makes possible learning opportunities about timely and important topics. She stated, “By participating in this program, students will develop a fundamental understanding of the role humanitarianism plays in today’s society, grow their abilities to put multicultural appreciation into action, and gain an understanding of how every person can apply skills to contribute to society and community.” John C. Spier, Chief Executive Officer of Covenant Bank commented, “We are fortunate to have so many iconic leaders, like Ms. Buck, in our regional history. We have learned lessons from them about integrity, support, and service for the good of many. It is vitally important that our students be exposed to wisdom from the past as they pursue possibilities for the future. Covenant Bank considers it an honor to support this program and the work of Pearl S. Buck International.”
