The Bucks County Herald Foundation has received a grant of $4,000 from Foundations Community Partnership to support its journalism fund. The grant will be used to highlight the work of nonprofits whose work has not been frequently publicized in the local area. A series of feature stories will highlight organizations that may not be known to a large audience. Each story will include photographs and text, explaining an organization’s purpose and highlighting the people involved -- leaders, volunteers and clients. The following organizations will be promoted: Hands Holding Hearts, a bereavement organization that offers grief counseling for children, teens and families; support groups; a summer camp for children; and workshops, training and community presentations. RJ Leonard Foundation, which educates, mentors and initiates the careers of young adults who are aging out of the foster care system. The Baby Bureau consists of more than 40 health and human services providers who distribute clothes and supplies called Baby Bundles to families in need. Hammerheads Sled Hockey teams include boys and girls ranging in age 5 to18 and adults who have physical disabilities; sled hockey provides an outlet to be competitive, become a team player, and make new friends. VITA Education Services serves unemployed, underemployed, and uneducated adults in the Bucks County community and the criminal justice system; programming focuses on developing skills that allow students to gain entry to a highly competitive work environment, to transition to further education and training, and to support their children’s success in school. Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, a well-known organization that could benefit from more attention to its local troops; more than 150 troops are in the Central Bucks region. In response, the organization provides grants and technical assistance, scholarships, and professional development as well as service-learning opportunities through collaborative partnerships.
