Sixty Student Ambassadors will learn how to advance STEM experiences and opportunities in their home schools and districts. PA SEED, a nationally recognized STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Ecosystem encompassing Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery Counties, is proud to be launching the Chief Science Officer (CSO) Leadership Training Institute. This CSO program is made possible through a PAsmart Advancing Grant that PA SEED received from Governor Tom Wolf in February 2019. The CSO Leadership Training Institute is designed to encourage middle and high school student voices by placing them in the center of STEM experiences and community action. This 21st century program aims to: Cultivate a pipeline of diverse STEM leaders Foster communicate and collaboration among CSOs Enrich school STEM culture and career awareness Amplify student voice in STEM conversations in the community CSOs are 6th-12th grade students that have been elected by their peers. Sixty students will be attending the Leadership Training Institute, representing 19 school districts and 22 schools from the PA SEED region of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery Counties. The CSOs will act as an ambassador representing both their schools and home school districts, and will strive to bring STEM leadership, experiences, and opportunities back to their peers, as well as change to their communities. The CSO Leadership Training Institute will take place on August 12-13, 2019 on the campus of Arcadia University in Glenside, PA (Montgomery County). The two full days of training will include sessions on STEM-onstrations, Roles and Responsibilities, Engineering Design Challenges, Working with Adults, Ecosystem Maps, and more. Through panel discussions and breakout sessions students will develop their CSO elevator pitch, learn how to tell their own CSO story, develop an action plan, and learn about the top 5 industries in southeastern PA (healthcare, technology, smart energy, agriculture, and manufacturing). Complimenting this will be periods where the students will learn to network with their fellow CSOs to establish collaboration and sharing. This Chief Science Officer Leadership Training Institute is the result of a collaboration between the PA SEED managing entities; the Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery County Intermediate Units, and is grant funded for the 2019-2020 academic year. Substitute costs, transportation costs to and from the training institute, cabinet meetings and the end-of-year celebration as wells as an action plan stipend will be provided to each school. All expenses for the Summer Leadership Institute will be covered by the grant.
