Pearl S. Buck International is thrilled to announce that the Pearl S. Buck House has been awarded accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). AAM, the only organization representing the entire scope of the museum community, made the announcement this week that the Pearl S. Buck House, a National Historic Landmark museum in Hilltown, PA, was awarded accreditation at the October 2021 meeting of AAM’s Accreditation Commission. Of the nation’s estimated 33,000 museums, 1,095 are currently accredited. Through a rigorous process of self-assessment and review by their peers, the Pearl S. Buck House and 14 other newly and re-accredited museums have demonstrated they meet standards and best practices, and are educational entities that are appropriate stewards of the collections and resources they hold in the public trust. Recognized as the field’s gold standard for museum excellence for 50 years, AAM accreditation signifies a museum’s quality and credibility to the entire museum community, to governments and outside agencies, and to the museum-going public. The Accreditation Program helps to ensure the integrity and accessibility of museum collections, reinforce the educational and public service roles of museums, and promote good governance practices and ethical behavior. The Pearl S. Buck House is a part of Pearl S. Buck International, the non-profit organization founded by Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer, humanitarian, and activist Pearl S. Buck. The beautiful and iconic Bucks County stone farmhouse, Pearl Buck’s former home, contains a rich, intact collection from the extraordinary (the typewriter on which she wrote The Good Earth) to the ordinary (a closet full of board games her family played). In addition to offering tours of the Pearl S. Buck House, Pearl S. Buck International continues Pearl Buck’s cross-cultural and humanitarian legacy of bridging cultures and changing lives through its international child sponsorship program and providing intercultural diversity and inclusion education and training locally for businesses, organizations, and schools. “The American Alliance of Museums Accreditation is vitally important to support the growth of Pearl S. Buck International as it helps to bring national recognition and prominence to the historic grounds of Pearl S Buck,” noted Mateen Afzal, Vice Chair of the Pearl S. Buck International Board of Directors. “By bolstering our public view and incorporating the AAM award in our branding strategy we expect to further strengthen and expand the reach our programs and services to existing and new audiences.” “This accreditation offers a high-profile peer validation that supports the credibility and value of Pearl S. Buck International and our mission,” stated Helen Ljungdahl Round, Secretary of the Pearl S. Buck International Board of Directors. “Today more than ever, we need to communicate and deliver on Pearl‘s mission of equality, diversity and inclusion. This accreditation supports our work in so many ways.” VJ Kopacki, Curator and Historic House Director for Pearl S. Buck International, noted, “Accreditation through the American Alliance of Museums is essential to the growth of the historic house program at Pearl S. Buck International. Through accreditation, we perfectly position ourselves as leaders in the field. The accreditation award is an opportunity to use this momentum in becoming an authority on achieving public good and consciousness-raising at historic sites, a goal which is based upon the ideals and legacy of our founder, Pearl S. Buck.” Anna Katz, President & CEO of Pearl S. Buck International, added that this public, external, and official acknowledgement that the Pearl S. Buck House meets the highest standards of excellence and best practices “ensures public trust and the ability to preserve the legacy of Pearl S. Buck.” “Accredited museums are a community of institutions that have chosen to hold themselves publicly accountable to excellence,” said Laura L. Lott, Alliance President and CEO. “Accreditation is clearly a significant achievement, of which both the institutions and the communities they serve can be extremely proud.” For more information on the Pearl S.
